LockDown Browser is a specialized browser designed to secure the testing environment in Blackboard Learn. When students use LockDown Browser for taking Blackboard tests, they cannot print, copy, navigate to other websites, access other applications, or exit the test until it is submitted for grading. Additionally, tests intended for LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with regular browsers. While LockDown Browser operates similarly to a standard browser, some features have been removed or function differently.
To add LockDown Browser to an existing Blackboard exam:
- Deploy a test in your course (NOTE: the test must be deployed to be selectable on the LockDown Browser Dashboard).
- Click to expand Course Tools, then select Respondus LockDown Browser.
- On the Respondus LockDown Browser Dashboard, click the arrow to the left of the name of the exam you wish to require LockDown Browser for and select Settings.
- Under the LockDown Browser Settings, click the radio button next to Require Respondus LockDown Browser.
- Next, you can configure settings on the Password Settings and Additional Settings menus. When you have completed this step to your liking, click Save + Close to save the changes (NOTE: The optional "Password to access exam", under Password Settings, is different from the passwords set in Blackboard Test Options).
Passwords and LockDown Browser
In Blackboard (Orginal View) LockDown Browser uses the test password functionality to ensure students are using LockDown Browser to access the test.
- When a test is set up to use LockDown Browser, an internal password is automatically generated in the Blackboard test settings. This password is not intended for students to use or be given access to. Rather, the password is used by LockDown Broswer to prevent students from accessing the exam unless they are using LockDown Browser.
- Instructors should not alter or delete this password (in the Blackboard Test Options) once LockDown Browser has been enabled for the test, and instructors should never provide this password to students. When a student launches the test through LockDown Browser, the browser will automatically input the password, and the student will be able to access the test.
- If a student attempts to access the test without LockDown Browser, they will be notified that LockDown Browser is required to access the exam, and prompted to start LockDown Browser and navigate back to the assessment to continue.
- If an instructor DOES want students to enter a password to access the test, this can be set in the Respondus LockDown Browser Password Settings, in the "Password to access exam (optional) field. This password field is not supported with LockDown Browser for Chromebook, if only using LockDown Browser for the exam. For the password field to be supported on Chromebooks, Respondus Monitor must also be set as a requirement for the exam.
